Buffalo or bison

We saw quite a few buffalo/bison on our journey through Yellowstone. Our fondest memory is of Sophie.
Me: Look some buffalo
Sophie: Mom, they are bison. Buffalo is a word you say to yourself.

I don't know where she comes up with these things.
